Description of Practice
With advanced fellowship training in both Interventional Pain Medicine and Sports Medicine, Dr. Haber provides patients with a unique combination of clinical skills and approaches to treating painful conditions.
The fields of Sports Medicine and Interventional Pain Medicine provide complementary approaches to the comprehensive care of many common painful, degenerative and debilitating conditions of the spine and extremities. Sports Medicine emphasizes the implementation of biomechanical rehabilitation techniques. Biomechanical rehabilitation focuses on optimizing task oriented neuromusculoskeletal conditioning and coordination. Left unchecked, dysfunctional movement and postural patterns induce an amplified state of pain, which frequently inhibit the rehabilitation progress. This occurs commonly with worsening conditions of the back, neck and extremities. Interventional Pain Medicine provides important complementary interventions that can ameliorate pain generators and thereby facilitate the rehabilitation process.
Chronic pain management goals include maintaining optimal activity tolerance, function and quality of life for patients relative to the pathology at the root of their chronic condition. Challenges to clinical management often include recurrent painful exacerbations contributing to a cascading cycle of further physical deconditioning, increased pain and opioid dose escalations. Resultant deterioration of the physical and psychological state may provoke a descending spiral, leading to patient abandonment of desired social, occupational and recreational activities. With combined interventional pain management and sports medicine techniques, Dr. Haber is well positioned to treat chronic pain patients by offering them balanced and tailored therapeutic regimens so that they can experience improvements, stay engaged in their care, and maintain appropriate levels of activity.
