Neuromodulation

Neuromodulation devices are subcutaneous, surgically implanted devices that work to enhance the nervous system’s ability to block pain signals before these signals reach the brain.

The technology for these devices is based upon the science of the Gate Theory of Pain. There are “gates” located in areas of the brain and spinal cord that open to pain signals when parts of the body are injured. There are also “gates” that close to pain signals when stimulated by either chemical substances or electrical currents.

Two common neuromodulation devices currently available are the spinal cord stimulator and the spinal infusion pump.
